Near Here / Live across the UK

Local events.
Properly found.

Near Here is a free local-events service created and operated by Furls Digital Ltd. It gathers public listings from across the UK, organises them around places people know, and keeps the original source close at hand.

Why it exists

The interesting stuff was already there. Finding it was another matter.

A venue publishes one way, a council another, and a community group has its own perfectly sensible system. The information is public, but scattered across source pages that were never designed to work together.

Near Here does the patient bit. It brings listings together, connects them to recognisable places, and helps people find something worth leaving the house for.

The organiser or original publisher still has the final word. Every event links back to its source, because times change, details move, and village halls have lives of their own.

Product thinking

A useful listing needs context, not confetti.

Place, timing, and provenance have to make sense together. Near Here is designed around that relationship.

  1. Gather the public listings

A separate collection process visits the places where organisers and publishers make event information public.

  2. Make the details coherent

Useful fields are prepared so events can be understood and arranged around real locations.

  3. Keep the provenance

The source travels with the listing, giving people a direct route to the organiser or original publisher.

  4. Learn from the live service

Furls operates Near Here, so product decisions keep meeting real listings, real people, and the occasional gremlin.

Under the surface

Collection and delivery move at different rhythms.

Unpredictable source material needs a different boundary from a responsive public product. Separating the two keeps each part focused on its own job.

Collection
A Python pipeline gathers public event listings and prepares the data.
Catalogue
The structured event catalogue lives in PostgreSQL.
Connection
Cloudflare Hyperdrive connects the web application to PostgreSQL.
Delivery
Next.js runs on Cloudflare Workers. D1 supports operational features, with KV and caching used selectively.
Attribution
The public experience keeps a route back to the original event source.

Made to stay useful

A live product keeps the conversation honest.

Near Here is not a prototype parked after launch. Furls runs the service, responds to awkward source pages, and keeps product, engineering, and editorial judgement connected.

It is free to use. Optional Community Boosts give an event paid visibility and boosted placements are clearly labelled. Promotion should look like promotion. No fake moustache required.
